Company Fundamentals
Fundamental analysis connects earnings power, balance-sheet quality, capital allocation and competitive position.
MORGANS CAPITAL MANAGEMENT
A structured process connects information selection, business analysis, valuation and continuing review.
01 / MCM
We begin with a precise question: business-model quality, a change in industry structure or a valuation assumption. The market, time horizon and relevant comparisons are defined.
02 / MCM
Company reports, corporate disclosures and economic data are assessed for relevance, timeliness and comparability. Earnings, balance-sheet structure, cash flow and capital allocation are considered together.
03 / MCM
Alternative operating outcomes are translated into understandable valuation assumptions. The analysis then considers risks, overlaps and dependencies within a portfolio context.

Conclusions are documented alongside key assumptions and unresolved questions. New information prompts a review of the thesis rather than an automatic change in perspective.
In depth
Before evaluating data, it is necessary to ask whether the measures describe the same thing. Financial years may cover different periods, acquisitions may change the reporting perimeter and companies may present earnings measures differently. A useful comparison explains those differences. It also considers when information was published and whether subsequent disclosures changed the earlier picture. This preparation turns a collection of figures into a workable analytical foundation.
02
A model is most helpful when it answers an economic question. Revenue can be examined through volumes, prices and product mix; cash flow also requires attention to margins, investment and working capital. The choice of drivers depends on the business model. The analytical task is to make the most important relationships visible while respecting the limits of the available information, rather than creating detail that cannot be supported.
03
After establishing the initial model, the next question is how dependent its conclusions are on particular assumptions. Does a small margin change alter the valuation materially? Does financing depend on a specific growth path? Must several favourable assumptions hold at the same time? These questions explain the structure of a thesis. Scenarios should represent different economic developments and their consequences, rather than simply produce a larger collection of tables.
04
A clear summary brings together the essential parts of the analysis: the question, relevant observations, economic explanation, scenarios and unresolved issues. It should also identify developments that deserve particular attention in future. This structure makes later comparisons with new information more useful. Readers can see whether the starting conditions have changed or whether subsequent evidence has simply refined the original expectations, without having to reconstruct the entire argument.
